A Global Tribute: Sumatran Tiger Cubs Named for Rangers Serasi and Rina

The arrival of new life is always something to celebrate—but sometimes, it carries a deeper meaning that reaches far beyond one place. Recently, at the Dallas Zoo in Texas, the birth of two Sumatran tiger cubs has brought not only joy, but a powerful connection to the forests of Sumatra and the people who dedicate their lives to protecting them.
In a truly meaningful tribute, these two cubs have been named Serasi and Rina—honouring one of our own Sumatran Ranger Project rangers, Serasi, who sadly passed away in February 2024, and his wife, Rina.

For those who knew him, Serasi was more than a ranger. He was a protector of the forest, a defender of wildlife, and a deeply respected member of his community. His work on the frontlines of conservation helped safeguard the fragile habitat of the critically endangered Sumatran tiger, a species with fewer than 400 individuals remaining in the wild - the Leuser Ecosystem where Sumatran Ranger Project works is one of their last strongholds. Every patrol he undertook, every snare he removed, and every risk he faced contributed to a safer future for this critically endangered species.

To see his name live on—not only in memory, but embodied in a new generation of tigers on the other side of the world—is both moving and profoundly symbolic.
Rina, too, represents strength and resilience. As a ranger, her support and sacrifice are part of the unseen foundation that makes conservation work possible. Naming one of the cubs after her acknowledges the vital role that families and women play in this mission.
At the Dallas Zoo, the cubs born on February 22, 2026, will act as ambassadors for their species, helping to raise awareness about the ongoing threats facing Sumatran tigers in the wild—habitat loss, human-wildlife conflict, and poaching. But now, they also carry with them a story. A story of dedication, loss, love, and hope.

For the Sumatran Ranger Project, this gesture is deeply meaningful. It reminds us that conservation is a global effort, one that connects people across continents through a shared commitment to protecting wildlife. It also ensures that Serasi’s legacy continues—not only in the forests he worked so hard to protect, but in the hearts of those who hear his story.
As these cubs grow, so too does the impact of their names. They represent the next generation—both in zoos and in the wild—and the importance of continuing the work that rangers like Serasi and the team from Sumatran Ranger Project dedicate their lives to.
